Happy Motivation Monday! Today we’re going to focus on not sweating the small stuff, while ensuring that we enjoy the little things.
I was thinking this morning about two motivational thoughts, that at first seem to conflict, but that can actually support each other well.
The first is something that my grandmother always used to say … “Don’t sweat the small stuff, and it’s all small stuff.” To me, this is about being resilient when things aren’t going exactly my way, and not worrying so much about things I can’t control. When I’m not careful about it, I tend to ride the “ups and downs” of emotions, and this quote helps remind me that I don’t need to do so.
On the other hand, it is important to pay attention to the little good things, because sometimes these moments pass us by before we even focus on appreciating them. Passing moments of laughter with friends and family, enjoying the sense of pride you feel after a big accomplishment, a feeling of gratitude that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy. These are the things that matter in the long-run, so take the time to enjoy the little things.
I don’t think that not sweating the small stuff and enjoying the little things have to be in conflict. When we focus on letting little annoyances pass us by, but savoring life’s little delights, we’re able to get the most out of life, and maximize our joy. Take a moment to notice how you react to the little things today!
2015 Thank You, 2016 Update, and Big Announcement!
In case you haven’t seen it, I want to share a video I made to thank you for your help in making 2015 such a wonderful year. Be sure to watch until the end, because there’s a BIG announcement about something coming in 2016!
Now it’s your turn … What do you hope to accomplish in 2016? What little things will you enjoy today?
Oh – and I am so thrilled with your upcoming book, the success you have seen with your business, and the apparent happiness you have in your life and you and Kevin share in your marriage. I wish you guys all the happiness and success in 2016!
I remember when the book ‘don’t sweat the small stuff’ came out, and how although the expression wasn’t ‘new’ it really took off at that point (especially with the tagline ‘and it’s all small stuff’ that got him the trademark).
But it is always important to remember – last night the four of us sat down on the couch in front of the tree to chat and had our unfinished toffee (we normally have chocolate on top & bottom … haven’t done second layer yet!). Who cares if it wasn’t finished – it was just great sitting down together and chatting. So much of this year is like that – focus on what matters, and scrambling and stressing out is NOT what matters!
As for next year, the thought of topping 3000 miles again sounds nice (I’ve done 3 years in a row now), but I don’t really care so long as I’m running and healthy.
Chris will be going to college, and Danny finishing freshman year … and all I want for them is happiness and the realization of their dreams. And time for Lisa and I together.
